The
Martial Arts provide numerous benefits to thousands of
practitioners worldwide. However, not everything in the
garden is rosy especially when it comes to realistic self
defence. The intention of this website is to provide information and personal opinions on a variety of martial arts in particular ones that I have actively been involved in. In addition to this you will find recommendations and links to sites and resources that have complimented my training
in the martial arts over the last 30 years.I started Martial Arts in 1980 and from day one up to the present day supplemented my training by collecting books and other media some good, some bad, I kept them all. As a result of this you will find links to books and resources throughout these pages that I believe are worth checking out. The Martial Way is a website produced by somebody who has spent most of their life training in and who is truly passionate about Martial Arts. Someone who started out in awe of so called 'Martial Art experts' but who eventually learnt not to blindly follow, life is too short and too precious. Please be aware that some pages, depending on your style or reasons for training, may not be pleasant reading but remember this is only my experience. For the majority however, including those that are looking to begin training, I hope you find the information useful. This website is in no way trying to put down practitioners for whom martial arts is a way of life but there are definitely people out there who have taken up martial arts under a false pretense. What is practised in a Dojo can be miles away from the aggressive 'fight like the devil' attitude required in a multiple opponent street fight. That said, I get the fact that people want different things from their training and not everyone wants to fight in a ring or cage. Training hard to the point of exhaustion can be exhilerating. Switching off from life's chalenges can de-stress the mind and give a sense of wellbeing. Performing a near perfect Kata or using hip vibration to make your punches snap or landing that reverse roundhouse kick with precision and control can all be deeply satisfying. Believe me I get it, and this is all fine as long as the instructor does not teach and the practitioner does not pretend that what they are doing is self defence. Finally if you're wondering what the 4 Kanji symbols on the logo translate to, the answer is "parting the clouds, seeking the way" in other words don't accept anything, and that includes what I say, instead question everything and find your own way, which just may be the Martial Way. Michael Batten 2012 If you are looking for more general information on a wider selection of Martial Arts and without my bias then I can thoroughly recommend the following resources: A beautiful book entitled The Way of the Warrior by Chris Crudelli (Hardback) and Fight Quest (DVD). I have put 2 links to the book below because the first one which I possess seems very expensive. |
